Are you eligible for the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a nationally funded scheme designed to provide access to lifelong support for people living with a disability. Eligibility is based on age, residency status, and the nature of your impairment or condition and the impact it has on your daily functions.

Eligibility criteria

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is responsible for assessing your eligibility to participate in the NDIS.  To be eligible you must:

  • Be under 65 years of age (My Aged Care applies over 65)
  • Be a resident of Australia
  • Have an impairment or condition that is likely to be permanent (lifelong) and that stops you from doing everyday things by yourself

Steps for eligibility criteria:

Step 1: Review the requirements on the the NDIS Access Checklist.

Step 2: Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110 to discuss your eligibility.

If you have any questions about the checklist you can call the MS Queensland NeuroAssist InfoLine on 1800 177 591 .

Confirming your eligibility

Once you have contacted the NDIA to discuss your eligibility and they believe you may be eligible for the NDIS, you will be sent an Access Request Form. For advice or assistance with completing your Access Request Form, please contact our NeuroAssist InfoLine on 1800 177 591.

Think you aren’t eligible for the NDIS?

Many people with multiple sclerosis and progressive neurological diseases who are currently living well and managing symptoms may not think they need or are eligible for the NDIS. The following questions may help you consider whether the funded supports and services through the NDIS are relevant and may be of assistance to you:

Do you usually need support from a person or assistive equipment to sustain your lifestyle?

You could need support doing daily jobs inside or outside of the house, managing finances or paperwork or even managing anxiety and/or emotions.

If you currently need support for daily life, you may be eligible – and benefit from – NDIS services and supports.

Would accessing supports now help you reduce your support needs in the future?

You may be eligible for early intervention access to the NDIS if there is evidence that getting supports now (early interventions) will help you reduce your support needs in the future.

It is worthwhile checking your options and asking yourself if your condition is likely to change in the future. MS and progressive neurological diseases are variable and unpredictable diseases and it is important that you have access to the support you need both now and in the future.

If you are not eligible for the NDIS

If you don’t meet the NDIS access requirements MS Queensland can provide you with information about other supports and services that could be of benefit to you and help with referral to these.
