The NDIS is a nationally funded scheme designed to provide access to lifelong support for people living with a disability. The scheme identifies supports to assist people meet their goals and enable them to life their life the way they want to.
If your disability affects your ability to take part in everyday activities and you acquired it before the age of 65, the NDIS is for you.
The introduction of the NDIS is strongly positive. It makes it possible for you to choose service providers and take control over decisions that affect how you live your life. The NDIS is based on the development of a personalised plan that outlines the supports and services you require to meet your goals and live an inclusive life. Services and supports, funded through the NDIS, can include assistance with activities such as household tasks, personal care, sustaining informal supports, recreation, physiotherapy, accommodation and more.
To become a participant in the NDIS you must first contact the NDIA to discuss your eligibility.
To determine your individual support requirements you will have a ‘planning conversation’ or ‘planning meeting’ with an NDIA planner. This meeting can be held at your home, local NDIA office or another venue of your choice. During this meeting the planner will discuss your goals and supports and services you may need. The information you provide during this meeting will be used to develop your personal plan, so it is important that you are well pre-prepared.
